Tibioperoneal trunk

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 18 Mar 2025

The tibioperoneal (TP) trunk, occasionally referred to as the tibiofibular trunk, is the direct continuation of the popliteal artery in the posterior upper leg after the origin of the anterior tibial artery. It is a short trunk that bifurcates into two terminal branches.

Although tibioperoneal trunk is a commonly clinically used term, it is not present in the formal anatomical terminology, where the popliteal artery continues as the posterior tibial artery, with the fibular artery being its branch 5.

The TP trunk may be absent if the popliteal artery terminates as a trifurcation ref.
