Ansa pancreatica

Last revised by Yaïr Glick on 6 Oct 2024

Ansa pancreatica is a rare type of anatomical variation of the pancreatic duct. It comprises a focal atrophy at the origin of the accessory pancreatic duct (of Santorini) from the main pancreatic duct (of Wirsung) and a looping duct arising from the main pancreatic duct and continuing as the accessory pancreatic duct, which terminates at the minor papilla (see Figure 1). The ansa pancreatica thus bridges the gap caused by the accessory pancreatic duct atrophy, albeit by a curved route that first descends, then ascends.

Ansa pancreatica has been considered as a predisposing factor in patients with idiopathic acute pancreatitis 3,6.

This type of pancreatic ductal variation can be identified on ERCP or MRCP studies.

History and etymology

It is derived from the Latin "ansa", which means "handle" as its configuration resembles a handle.
