The dorsal intercarpal ligament is one of the extrinsic wrist ligaments.
Gross anatomy
The dorsal intercarpal ligament has a horizontal orientation, however, together with the dorsal radiotriquetral ligament, it is said to have a zig-zag configuration.
It runs from the dorsal tubercle of the triquetrum to the dorsal groove of the scaphoid. It also has attachments to the lunate and, in 50% of individuals, the trapezium.
Its function is to provide stability to the carpal bones, in particular contributing to scapholunate stability. It prevents scapholunate dissociation in a weight-bearing upper limb.
