Inferior cavoatrial junction

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 11 Feb 2020

The inferior cavoatrial junction (ICAJ) is the term given to the point at which the inferior vena cava (IVC) enters the right atrium. It is less commonly used/seen, in contradistinction to the superior cavoatrial junction

Accurate localization of the inferior cavoatrial junction is of practical importance in neonates/infants when it comes to correct placement of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICCs), which have been inserted via a lower limb vein.
